The Navy completed an Unmanned Carrier Aviation Demonstration (UCAD) of its MQ-25 unmanned air system prototype in December aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77), laying the groundwork for future carrier-based UAS operations.
The MQ-25 will be the world’s first operational, carrier-based unmanned aircraft and is integral to the Air Wing of the Future Family of Systems (AWotF FoS). Its initial operating capability (IOC) as an aerial refueling tanker will extend the range, operational capability and power projection of the carrier air wing (CVW) and carrier strike group (CSG). GHWB is operating in the Atlantic Ocean in support of naval operations to maintain maritime stability and security in order to ensure access, deter aggression and defend U.S., allied and partner interests.
USS Bataan (LHD 5) is a multipurpose Amphibious Assault ship commissioned in 1997 and home ported in Norfolk, VA. With a crew of nearly 1000 Sailors and Marines, the ship is capable of embarking a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a mix of aircraft including the MV-22 Osprey tilt rotor helicopter and AV-8B Harrier Light Attack Jet, and up to three Landing Craft Air Cushion. U.S. Fleet support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
